2013 GFC Champions Augusta Prep Cavaliers
by SCOTT ROUCH (Augusta Chronical)

After battling for 48 minutes and two overtimes, Augusta Prep came away with a 28-21 win over Johnson Ferry Christian Academy and the Glory For Christ League championship on Saturday.

In the second overtime, Cavaliers’ sophomore quarterback Jimmy St. Louis, starting in place of senior Nate Pylant, found sophomore Josh Rosenblum in the right corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown and a 28-21 lead. On the ensuing play, Rosenblum picked off the Saints’ Mason Meadows, ending the game and sending the team and fans into a state of unbridled joy. “I saw my man go out and I knew I had to make a play on that one,” said Rosenblum of his interception.

On top of starter Patrick Reynolds breaking his fibula in last week’s semifinal game, Pylant dislocated his elbow Thursday and running back Kevin Huggins was hobbled by an ankle injury. Fullback Nolan Brandon was head coach Harry Bacheller’s workhorse, carrying the ball 42 times for 248 yards, including an 86-yard touchdown just before the half and a 1-yarder that tied the game with 7:02 remaining.

“That was probably the best game I’ve ever played in, in my entire life,” Brandon said. “Everybody just pulled together, it wasn’t just one guy, it was a team effort.” Bacheller was emotional talking about the team after the game. “In my 31 years of coaching, I can’t think of a better group, I’m so proud of them,” he said. After stopping the Saints (9-3) on their first drive of the game, the Cavaliers (11-1) had a 16-play, 78-yard drive that took nine minutes off the clock with St. Louis sneaking in from a yard out.

After the Saints tied it, Brandon rumbled 86 yards for a touchdown with 1:16 left in the half.
The Saints scored on their first two possessions of the second half to take a 21-14 lead, but Brandon again pounded the ball in from 1-yard out. In the first overtime, the Cavaliers forced a fumble on the Saints’ possession, but Huggins’ 30-yard field goal attempt was just wide.

#1 ranked East Division Augusta Prep to play #1 ranked West Division Johnson Ferry Saints in GFC Championship game

Both regular season division leaders posted big victories in the GFC Semifinals. Augusta Prep defeated the Crown Knights 56 to 7 as fullback Nolan Brandon led the way. The Johnson Ferry Saints beat the North Georgia Falcons 31 to 7.

The Augusta Eagles scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:30 left in the game to go up 22-21, but then held on as Grace came right back and drove down inside the 10. Grace had a chance to win but the field goal attempt was wide left.

Crown Knights 34 North Georgia 6

The Knights used a strong ground game to break open a close ballgame in the 4th quarter and defeat the previously unbeaten Falcons. Crown took the opening kickoff and marched 92 yards down the field capped off by a Hamilton Armour to Simeon Buhler touchdown pass to go up 6-0. Kicker Aaron Redlinger added the extra point to give the Knights a 7-0 lead. Falcons running back Tevon Valdez brought the Falcons back with an 86 yard touchdown run near the end of the 1st half, the extra point was no good to make the score 7-6 in favor of Crown.

The second half saw the Falcons start off driving the field but not able to convert on a 4th down play. From there Crown’s running game featuring Tylon Walker took over. Crown scored near the end of the third quarter to go up 14-6. After an interception on the next series, Walker was able to score again on a short run and Crown had a 21-6 lead early in the 4th quarter. A couple of miscues by the Falcons (another interception and fumble) led to 2 more scores by Walker giving Crown the 34-6 victory and first place in the West Division.

East Atlanta 18 Skipstone Academy 0

The East Atlanta Mustangs opened their season against their rival, the Skipstone Warriors, in a GFC East Division game. Several players are friends with players from the other team so this makes this game extra special. After a hard fought game, the Mustangs prevailed 18-0. QB Kevin Ard hooked up with James Donnelly for the first touchdown on a 26 yard completion in the first quarter to go up 6-0. Brett Marston added another touchdown in the third quarter with a 4 yard touchdown run to make the score 14-0. Late in the 4th quarter, Daventa Adams scored on a 31 yard touchdown run to complete the scoring for the Mustangs. The Mustangs next game will be Friday, Aug 23rd, against the Johnson Ferry Saints while Skipstone has no game this Friday.

North Georgia 31 Fulton Leadership Academy 0

The Falcons used a combination of passing and running in their opening win. Tevon Valdez led the way with 2 TD runs and Austin Rothenberger added one while QB Zach Waddell threw a touchdown pass to Matt Howard. Kicker Patrick Thigpen added a 27 yard field goal and was good on 2 of 3 extra point kicks. Waddell was good on a 2-point converstion. The Falcons host the Augusta Eagles this Friday.
